Trends & Research Reports

A look at the latest research and data shaping philanthropy and the nonprofit sector.

U.S. Foundations Maintain Global Giving, but Largest Funders Dominate
Global giving by U.S. foundations remained relatively stable between 2020 and 2023, accounting for nearly 24% of overall foundation grant dollars in 2023, according to the new State of Global Giving by U.S. Foundations report from Candid and the Council on Foundations. Key findings:

  • Large foundations dominate: The 10 largest global grantmakers accounted for 64% of global foundation giving, with the Gates Foundation alone providing approximately 45%.

  • U.S. nonprofits remain primary intermediaries: Organizations headquartered in the United States received 54% of globally focused grant dollars and 65% of grants.

  • Direct international funding is growing: Grants to organizations based in the countries where projects operate increased from $4.2 billion in 2016–2019 to $7.3 billion in 2020–2023, though they represented just 14% of global grant dollars.

  • Donor-advised funds are major players: 51 national DAF sponsors distributed $14.1 billion through more than 89,000 globally focused grants. Their median grant was $15,000, compared with $125,000 for the foundations studied.

  • Regional priorities: Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia-Pacific attracted the largest shares of globally focused foundation funding.

Nonprofits Embrace AI but Lack Funding to Sustain and Expand Its Use

Fast Forward’s 2026 AI for Humanity Report finds that AI is improving nonprofit effectiveness, but funding remains a major obstacle. Among surveyed nonprofits, 92% reported improved service efficiency, 60% reached previously underserved populations, and 55% improved their ability to personalize services. Although 90% have plans to expand their AI initiatives, only 24% have the resources to do so. The report emphasizes that successful AI adoption requires more than technology. Nonprofits need sustained investments in staffing, training, data systems, evaluation, and responsible AI practices, along with strong leadership, organizational flexibility, and community involvement.
