Organization creates successful funder database for its members

A coalition of Kansas City-area nonprofits and philanthropists supports the nonprofit community in the greater Kansas City area. This coalition needed a real-time, 24/7 online database of local and national funders to offer their members. As this database would be the only local source of private funding information, it was important to make it as complete as possible.

They wanted to include all of the funders offering grants to nonprofit organizations in Kansas and Missouri. And they needed the list to be searchable, as well as sortable by interest area, deadline and geographic preferences.

Access Philanthropy developed a database with 800+ online profiles of local and national grantmakers funding in the Greater Kansas City area.

The client’s members report that the database one of the most useful membership benefits. The client is able to attract new members with the promise of access to this important tool. We continue to supplement the database with new funders and keep the information current and relevant. This year, we added local United Way chapters and civic clubs to the list of potential Kansas City funders.

There are side benefits of the database. Local nonprofit leaders report that they are much more likely to solicit grants from national grantmakers now that they have solid information from the online directory.

Another side benefit: There has been a significant increase in local foundation transparency. Foundations are now more willing to share information about what they do, what they prefer to fund and how to contact them.
