Giving by Interest Area:

  • Building Communities & Entrepreneurs - 36 %
  • Educating the Next Generation - 25 %
  • Education, Adult Education, Financial Literacy - 11 %

Overview: The Foundation has three primary interest areas. All funds are channeled through these areas.

Microfinance and Microentrepreneurship

Access to financial services can help the poor to increase income, build viable businesses, and reduce financial vulnerability through the availability of micro-credit along with a broader set of tailored financial products including savings, insurance and remittances. Microfinance and microenterprise development are recognized for their effective roles as instruments of change, empowering individuals, especially women, to become economically self-sufficient, while helping them achieve such goals as sending their children to school or supporting the preservation of their environment. The Citi Foundation is particularly interested in efforts that help microfinance institutions achieve scale and long-term sustainability.

Over the last decade, the Citi Foundation has granted more than $60 million in support of 250 microfinance programs and organizations across 55 countries. Foundation grants have been used to strengthen the capacity of these organizations to provide access to capital to low-income individuals, thus raising the quality of life for families and communities around the world.

Small and Growing Businesses

Small businesses are a powerful and important driver of economic growth and job creation around the globe. The Citi Foundation supports the growth of these enterprises by funding access to technical assistance and investment capital. However, capital and technical assistance are not enough to guarantee success. These small enterprises must also focus on addressing such issues as environmental sustainability, growing resource scarcity, changing business practice standards, and shifting regulations if they are going to succeed in a rapidly changing global economy.

Accordingly, the Citi Foundation is also focused on efforts to help small and growing businesses respond to changing realities in the marketplace and adopt new models for achieving financial and environmental sustainability. The Foundation is particularly interested in activities that support green enterprise development that generates "triple bottom-line" economic, environmental and social benefits

Education

Expanding educational opportunities and helping to improve academic achievement can be one of the most effective strategies for economically empowering households and increasing the ability of young people to contribute positively to the broader economy. We seek to support programs that focus on basic elementary and secondary education, as well as higher education programs that enrich the educational offerings at undergraduate and graduate schools of business.

Recognizing how critical obtaining a college degree is to increasing earning power and breaking inter-generational cycles of poverty, we are particularly focused on efforts to generate a dramatic and sustainable increase in the number of low-income and first-generation students who enroll in college and obtain a degree.

Financial Education and Asset Building

The Citi Foundation supports programs that provide individuals with access to knowledge and incentives that help them take control of their financial future by making informed decisions, acquiring and preserving financial assets, and responding to major life events that can affect income and expenses. Recognizing that consumers have different financial priorities at different stages of their lives, the Citi Foundation supports programs that reflect the differing needs, levels of understanding and learning styles of youth, adults and families in order to achieve greater scale and effectiveness.

Community Development

The Citi Foundation is committed to maintaining economically vibrant communities in the U.S. and Canada through the development or preservation of affordable housing for low- to moderate-income individuals; revitalization of underserved neighborhoods including rehabilitation of commercial corridors; or the development of community facilities such as charter schools and community centers. Additionally, we are committed to building the capacity of community development organizations to better serve their communities through management training and technical assistance.

The organizations typically supported by our community development portfolio are nonprofit community development corporations (CDCs), community development intermediaries and community development financial institutions (CDFIs) whose programs build and revitalize neighborhoods leading to economic growth and stability in the communities they serve.

Environment

In each of the Citi Foundation's core priorities we strive to partner with organizations that demonstrate a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship and incorporate sound environmental practices in their programs.

Further, the Citi Foundation maintains a commitment to actively working with partners to support environmental innovations, providing the financial and technical resources required to embed "green" component within key areas of their work.
