Overview: Capital One's grant-making practices focus on funding agencies and programs that deliver direct services to low- and moderate-income communities where we have operations facilities. Our grants utilize a combination of financial and volunteer efforts to create a sustainable effect on the community. Our focus areas for funding include education, youth empowerment and life skills training, and community development

  • Community Development: To further strengthen our communities, we support programs and services that focus on helping citizens lead more fulfilling and productive roles in society by improving their physical, economic, and social conditions. We've established alliances with key community development partners to provide affordable housing, support community enhancement projects, and promote economic development.

    Affordable Housing
We work with various entities to provide high-quality, affordable housing to low- and moderate-income individuals and families. We do this by investing in Low-Income Housing Tax Credit funds, as well as by providing financing directly to affordable housing developers.

    Neighborhood Revitalization
We've invested in projects that help revitalize and stabilize distressed neighborhoods in our communities. We do this by investing in Historic Tax Credit funds, as well as by providing financing directly to other types of revitalization efforts.

    Small Business Development
We provide financing for the development of small businesses to create jobs and strengthen our economy.

    1. On the retail side of our business, we are a leading provider of "micro-loans" to small businesses. Our average loan size is approximately $3,000, enabling us to reach very small businesses that often find it difficult to obtain financing. In 2002, Capital One F.S.B. made more small business loans than any other bank or thrift in the country.

    2. In addition, we make investments in Small Business Investment Corporations and other entities that support the creation and development of small businesses.
Services for Low- and Moderate-Income Populations
We've provided financing to organizations that deliver educational,
  • Education: Getting involved in education at all levels is one of the most direct and effective ways to make an impact on the community. The following programs have enabled us to assist students, schools, consumers, and Capital One® associates.

    Scholarship Programs
Through two programs, the Power of Nine Scholarship and the Access Opportunity Scholarship, we've helped send 66 graduating high school seniors to college in the last three years. Each student receives $5,000 or $10,000 in tuition and is selected based on academic improvement and achievement, community service, extracurricular activities, and financial need.

    Adopt-a-School Program
Capital One partners with local schools to help meet their specific needs. Associates serve as reading buddies, pen pals, and tutors to students, host holiday parties, and provide needed supplies, such as backpacks, school supplies, and winter coats.

    Financial Education Program
In 2000, Capital One developed a financial education program to empower our consumers, our communities, young people, and our associates to make smart financial decisions. This initiative supports Capital One's brand promise to deliver empowering financial solutions. By partnering with leading consumer groups, such as Consumer Action and Jump$tart, we provide important tools and resources.

    Capital One Leadership Grants
Through this signature program, thousands of at-risk kids in Richmond, Virginia, and Tampa, Florida, have benefited. The Leadership Grants program brings together youth-serving agencies such as the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and local museums to share their expertise, ideas, and resources to offer more effective programs for at-risk youth.
